History of TNPSC

A Public Service Commission was established by Indian Government in 1923 to study and investigate the Indian Civil Service salary structure and the transferring possibility of some duties to regional services. There were five English men and four Indian men, where Fareham’s Viscount Lee was serving as a chairman.Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission

The addressing of Indianisation rate of Indian Police and Indian Civil Service was also done by this commission. It determined a rate that it takes 15 years for Indian Civil Service and 25 years for Indian Police with 50% Indian Membership.

As a result of discretionary (non-compulsory) powers left to provincial (regional) Government, the Madras Government and Punjab Government initiated to set up public service commissions of their own.

In India, Madras Presidency was the first region to set up their own commission of service when the Madras Service Commission was setup with three members under Madras Legislature Act in 1929. In 1957, it became MPSC – Madras Public Service Commission from Madras Service Commission. When the name of the State, Madras was changed to Tamil Nadu in 1970 it was renamed as TNPSC (www.tnpsc.gov.in), Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission from Madras Public Service Commission.
