Suravaram Pratapa Reddy – Giant of Telangana Literature

Suravaram Pratapa Reddy History:

Suravaram Pratapa Reddy started Golkonda Kavula Sanchika to uplift Telangana Literature. He was born on 28th May 1896 in Boravelli village. Suravaram Pratap Reddy was a social activist and historian who sacrificed his life for the enlargement and advancement of Telangana Literature and Region. His parents Narayanareddy and Rangamma were belonged to Itikalapadu located in Mahabubnagar district. His early life began in his village where he was born.

Suravaram Pratapa Reddy has completed his higher education from Nizam College situated in Hyderabad. He then began his career as lawyer after finishing his BL and BA degrees from Presidency College, Madras which is present known as Chennai. Yet, he was distressed by the illiteracy of Telugu people. His fear was still exaggerated after witnessing the slow degradation of Telugu which is due to the dominance of Urdu speaking. He decided to save his mother tongue by using his knowledge and move out of this disgrace.

Suravaram Pratapareddy’s profile is rich with literature works that shows the purity and devotion of Telangana Telugu Language. In 1926, he took his first step to generate importance of their language among the Telugu Speaking People in Telangana through a publication, Golconda Patrika. It was published twice in a week to increase the popularity of the Language. Irrespective of Caste or tribe, it intended to help in the evolution of Telangana People. Several articles like Shobha, Bharti and Sujata were republished in the Patrika to ensure wider reach and help spreading the great cause.

In those times, there were no people for proof reading, editing and sub editing, etc. He alone did all things like content writing, proof reading, editing work, designing etc. He used many different names for his publications like Chitra Gupta, Bhava Kavi, Verri Vengalappa and more for various kinds of articles. He published about 1500 articles in the spam of 10 years in Golconda Patrika which is the Telangana’s first press media.

Suravaram was a scholar in Sanskrit, Urdu, Telugu and English languages. His love for Telangana and Telugu made him to publish primarily in Telugu. In the year 1949, the social history of Andhra was published in the form of “Andhrula Saangika Charitra”. It represents the rich history and great culture and origin of various castes of Telangana people. This earned him the “Kendra Sahitya Academy Puraskaram”. It was republished again and again and also been translated into language of Hindi by Laxmi Prasad Yarlagadda. From 1970, Andhrula Saangika Charitra became the official textbook of APCSC (Andhra Pradesh Civil Services Commission) along with IPS (Indian Police Services) and IAS (Indian Administrative Services).

Golconda History in Telugu:

Venkata Raghavachaaryulu, an Andhra poet criticised that the Telangana region does not have any poets and this made Suravaram Pratap Reddy very angry. He found all the poets of Telangana by doing a great research from all the villages and made them write poems. With over 350 telangana Kavulu, he published a book, “Golconda Kavula Sanchika” in 1936 and established the versatility and richness of Telangana Literature. He allowed them to publish their poems along with Suravaram Pratap Reddy Poems.

Suravaram’s other books include Mogalayi kathalu, Nizamrashtra Palanam, Ucchala Vishadamu, Sanghoddharana, Grandhalayamu, Haindava Dharmaveerulu, Hinduvula Pandugalu, Yuvajana Vignyanam. He has written up to 40 books and several articles based on novels, literary criticisms, novels and poems.

In the year 1921, Suravaram Pratapa Reddy also started an organisation, “Andhrajana Sangam”.

In 1952, he got elected from Mahabubnagar’s Vanaparthi Constituency to Hyderabad Assembly. He passed away on 25th August 1953 leaving a conscious generation and great Telangana. There is a statue of him on Tank Bund, for his endowment to literature.
