History of the High Court of Guwahati
In 1947, after the independence of India was declared, it was determined that a legislative entity was needed for the province of Assam, so in March 1948 the High Court of Assam was founded, which began its functions in April of that year. The Hon’ble Sir Justice R.F. Lodge was the first Chief Justice of this Court. This region of India went through several reorganizations in which states were separated, or new provinces were created, so this court adopted the name of High Court of Assam and Nagaland in 1963, and finally in 1971 adopted the current name of Gauhati High Court.
