AP and Telangana High Court

The states of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, in the south region of India, share the High Court of Judicature at Hyderabad for the State of Telangana and the State of Andhra Pradesh, one of the many high courts of India whose jurisdiction covers more than one state. Previously it was called High Court of Andhra Pradesh, but its name was changed to the one it currently carries on June 2, 2014.

High Court of Judicature at Hyderabad: Chief Justice

The current Chief Justice of the High Court of Judicature at Hyderabad is Sri Ramesh Ranganathan, The Hon’ble Acting Chief Justice. Ramesh Ranganathan has served in the office of Chief Justice since July 30, 2016. He graduated in 1977 and has a post-baccalaureate degree in commerce, completed in 1981. He has worked in various positions in the High Court AP since 1985 when he entered as Advocate. After that, it was Advocate General, Addl. Judge, Executive Chairman and, finally, Permanent position as an AP High Court Judge and Telangana High Court Judge.

High Court of Judicature at Hyderabad: History

It was established on November 5, 1956, under the name of High Court of Andhra Pradesh, under the State Reorganization Act. The Court located in the city of Hyderabad has a force of 49 judges, and are shared by the states of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. It will remain the shared court of those two states until 2024 when Hyderabad becomes the capital only of Telangana. When this happens, another High Court will have to be created for the state of Andhra Pradesh, since the current High Court of Judicature in Hyderabad will retain the jurisdiction of Telangana.

All this follows the agreement and the reorganization report of Andhra Pradesh, dated January 30, 2014.

High Court of Judicature at Hyderabad: the main building

The history the High Court building dates back to the year 1915 when its construction began. It is a building with a style of Saracenic architecture, built with white and red stones. It is located on the south bank of the Musi River and is considered one of the best buildings in the city.

Nizam VII Mir Osman Ali Khan, who at that time was the ruler of the state of Hyderabad, was the one who commissioned the construction of the building. The work was at the hands of Shankar Lal of Jaipur and Mehar Ali Fazil, the engineer who executed the design. Between April 15, 1915, and March 31, 1919, the building built from beginning to end, and its inauguration on April 20, 1920, by Nizam VII Mir Osman Ali Khan.

In the Nizam Museum, located in Purani Haveli, a silver carved model of the building exhibited, which presented by the Judicial Power before Nizam VII Mir Osman Ali Khan., 1936 and during the Silver Jubilee celebrations. This model, in addition to including a silver key, carved to perfection in a silver sheet, thick, whose weight close to 300 kg.

Currently, the High Court of Judicature in Hyderabad has two buildings at its headquarters: the main building, opened in 1920 and an annex opened in 1959. Before the creation of the annex and the Andhra Pradesh formation, the main building housed six judges, as well as the law room and the office staff.

In 1956 the Reorganization of States Act formulated, which doubled the number of judges existing in the main building when the High Court of AP formed. This number of judges and new staff generated the creation of an annex, to meet the space requirements, among other things. Between 1958 and 1959, the annexed building created, in which new spaces located: chambers for the 42 lawyers, office and recording rooms, as well as rooms for law enforcement officers. In the main building, the officer’s rooms and the registration rooms modified, as a measure to adjust the accommodation of 14 judges.
