What is the Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System?
The Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System or WHMIS is Canada‘s national workplace hazard communication standard”. This group of laws created in 1988 with the intention of reducing the injuries and illnesses in workplaces and giving employers and workers information about the hazardous products they will expose to while working. This legislation applies to all workplaces, with the exception of farms.

The most important aspects of WHMIS Canada are labeling containers of hazardous products and chemicals. WHMIS providing safety data sheets that have hazard and precautionary information, and educating workers and employers through different programs.

According to the legislation, those who supply hazardous products must label the products and provide safety data sheets if they want to import them or sell them. It is mandatory for employers to provide information about hazardous products in the workplace to their employers and give them education programs. Workers must educate about all the information regarding hazardous products that provided by the supplier before they start using them. These include the labels and safety data sheets of hazardous products used at the workplace and other documents like letters from the supplier in response to inquiries from the employer. The same applies if the hazardous products produced in the workplace.
The amount of training workers get depends on whether a product classified as a hazardous product or new to the workplace. In the Canadian Center for Occupational Health and Safety (CCOHS), there is a generic worker training course that you can get online for a small fee.
Education programs must include the following information:
Procedures for the safe use, storage, handling and disposal of a hazardous product when it is in a piping system, a process vessel or conveyance and when it is not; labels and modes of identification used at the workplace instead of labels; what people have to do in case of the presence of fugitive emissions; what to do if there is an emergency involving a hazardous product; and SDSs.
