In 1776, the East India Company created a Military Department in India, which was a colony of the British Empire at that time. At that time the Military Department was a branch of the most significant Public Department. The Department of Defense acquired its new name as the Ministry of Defense or Raksha Mantralaya in August 1947.

A Secretary works as the head of the Department of Defense Research and Development of MOD. His job is to advise the Indian Government on scientific matters of military logistics and equipment, formulation of design, research and also develop plans for specific equipment.
