It is the responsibility of the Government of India to protect India and its citizens from outside threats and attacks. Defending a country is impossible without having strong armed forces. It gave birth to the Ministry of Defense or MOD. The President of India has the supreme power to command the armed forces of India.

The primary function of the Defense Ministry of India is obtaining policy directions from the Government of India on all matters related to national security and defense and then communicating them to the Inter-Service Organizations, Service Headquarters, Production Establishments and Development and Research Organizations for execution. In 1776, the East India Company created a Military Department in India, which was a colony of the British Empire at that time. At that time the Military Department was a branch of the most significant Public Department. The Department of Defense acquired its new name as the Ministry of Defense or Raksha Mantralaya in August 1947.

1. Department of Defense or DODdefense

The Department of Defense takes care of Integrated Defense Staff or IDS, three Services and also several Inter-Service Organizations. The Department is also accountable for the defense policy, Defense Budget, Parliamentary matters, etc.

2. Department of Defense Research and Development or DDR&Dddrd image

A Secretary works as the head of the Department of Defense Research and Development of MOD. His job is to advise the Indian Government on scientific matters of military logistics and equipment, formulation of design, research and also develop plans for specific equipment.

4. Department of Ex-Servicemen Welfareex-servicemen defense

A Secretary is the head of the Department of Ex-Servicemen Welfare. The department has several responsibilities like welfare, resettlement, and payment of pension to ex-servicemen who have provided defense services to the country.
