The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports or MYAS is a branch of the Government of India (Bharat Sarkar) which monitors the Department of Sports and the Department of Youth Affairs in India. It also administered the Commonwealth games of 2010. The Ministry also distributes the yearly National Sports Awards in several categories. The Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna and the Arjuna Awards are the perfect examples. History of the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports

The Government of India established the Department of Sports in the year 1982 when it was organizing the Asian Games in New Delhi. During the International Youth Year celebration in 1985, the government of India (GOI) renamed the department as the Department of Youth Affairs & Sports. It became the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports in 2000, on 27th May. After 8 years, in 2008, the bifurcation of the Ministry took place, and since then it has two separate departments:

The Department of Sports distributes the sports awards like Special Awards to those sportsmen who win medals in International events on Sports, Arjuna Award, Dhyan Chand Award, etc. There is no single National Sports of India. Cricket, Kabaddi, and Football are the most popular games in India.

Keeping in mind the significance of sports and fitness, the Department of Sports has introduced a programme to revive India’s sports culture, and people recognize it as Khelo India.
