WBNSOU – Netaji Subhas Open University
Netaji Subhas Open University is basically the premier Open University in the State of West Bengal. 1997 was famous as it is the birth centenary year of Subhas Chandra Bose, popularly known as Netaji in India. The then Chief Minister of West Bengal declared at a State function that soon there would be an Open University in the state. The name of this University was Netaji Subhas Open University. As the name suggests, the university came into existence to dedicate it to the memory of India’s great freedom fighter, Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose. The abbreviated form of Netaji Subhas Open University is NSOU.
The West Bengal’s Higher Education Minister came up with this innovative idea after he returned from his visit to the United Kingdom’s Open University. The State Government of West Bengal created a steering committee of ten members with Dr. Bhaskar Ray Chowdhury as its head after getting the Higher Education Minister’s instructions.
Netaji Open University
They passed a State Act in the year 1997’s 20th August to support the opening of a State Open University to impart distance education to the students who need it. The central office of Netaji Subhas Open University is in the historically famous house of Sri Sarat Chandra Bose, Netaji’s elder brother. The University commenced functioning from 1998’s July with Bachelor’s Degree Courses in Commerce and Arts only.
The main idea behind opening such a university was to provide a fair chance of receiving higher education to several disadvantaged groups of students in the vernacular medium who want to pursue their higher education. It is India’s 10th Open University and West Bengal’s ninth Open University.
NSOU first Vice-Chancellor was Professor Radharaman Chakraborty. An Advisory Body panned and monitored the activities of the newly formed university. This advisory body consisted of senior administrators and eminent educationists. They took care of the preliminary set up essential for the Open University’s functioning from 1998’s July. The number of study centers that started functioning at that time under Netaji Open University was 31. They offered BDP (Bachelor Degree Programme in Commerce and Arts. In 1999, the Open University opened 5 more study centers with Commerce and Arts Courses for graduate students.
In the years 2002 and 2004 in January, Netaji Subhas Open University commenced Post Graduate Degree Courses in Mathematics, Social Work, and History respectively. NSOU second Vice-Chancellor was Professor Surabhi Banerjee who became the Vice-Chancellor on 17th November, in the year 2001.
At present, WBNSOU has emerged as the most prominent Open University in the state of West Bengal.
