People also remember the University of Burdwan as Burdwan University. It is a public university in the state of West Bengal. The abbreviated form of the University of Burdwan is B.U. Its campus is available in Purba Bardhaman. The State Government of West Bengal established this university as an affiliating and teaching university in the year 1960, on 15th June with 30 UG colleges and six graduate departments stretching across three districts that were under this university’s jurisdiction of India. Those three districts are the Birbhum District, the Hoogly District (barring Srirampore subdivision) and the Burdwan District (prohibiting Asansol subdivision).
The main campus of Burdwan University is near about 398 acres. There are a central library and several other departmental libraries. At present, the University of Burdwan offers students 66 postgraduate and 30 undergraduate programs. The number of Esteemed Faculties is 227, and the total number of affiliated colleges is 189 including B.Ed colleges, private institutes, and degree colleges. In the year 2016, NAAC has given A Grade to the University of Burdwan. The National Institutional Ranking Framework has given the rank 96 to B.U. in the year 2018. History of the formation of the University Burdwan
Udaychand Mahtab, the last king or Maharaja of Burdwan’s whole property of Burdwan became the property of the West Bengal State Government after the end of the Zamindari system. Bidhan Chandra Roy who was the Chief Minister of Bengal took the initiative of creating a university in the vast premises of the Burdwan palace. This is the history of the formation of the University of Burdwan in 1960.
Administration of the Burdwan University
The University of Burdwan is basically an autonomous state-level university. Its chancellor is the governor of West Bengal. The state’s governor appoints the Vice-Chancellor of B.U. He or she handles the daily administration of the Burdwan University. The pro-vice-chancellor assists the Vice Chancellor. The university court is the highest body of the University. Then there is the executive council which is accountable for taking all decisions related to the regular functioning of the university.
Burdwan University Distance Education
The University of Burdwan’s Directorate of Distance Education is accountable for offering post-graduate programs in distance mode. The Burdwan University DDE aims to facilitate those students who want to pursue their higher studies but unable to attend classes on a regular basis. The year of establishment of DDE was 1994.
