The state government of West Bengal established the West Bengal Board of Secondary Education in the year 1951 according to the provisions of the 1950 West Bengal Secondary Education Act. Dr. K. N. Katju, who was the Governor of the state at that time, inaugurated the West Bengal Board of Secondary Education in 1951, on 3rd May in WB, India. At the time of its creation, the name of the Board was the Board of Secondary Education. It has got its present name in the year 1964. The abbreviated form of the West Bengal Board of Secondary Education is WBBSE. The first chairman of the Board was Sri Apurba Kumar Chanda. The West Bengal State Government created WBBSE with the aim of
- Regulating, developing and monitoring secondary education of West Bengal
- Conducting the School Final Examination in a systematic way
Before the establishment of WBBSE, the University of Calcutta performed these activities.
Objectives of the WBBSE
The primary objectives of the West Bengal Board of Secondary Education are:
- Publishing the results of the state’s Secondary Examination
- Publication of its organ, Prashad Barta, a forum where the Board shares its views and experiences
- West Bengal Board of Secondary Education also conducts Camp Offices in several districts where the distribution of papers related to the Secondary Examination takes place for concerned schools and students.
When WBBSE commenced its journey in the year 1951, the number of high schools under it was 1270. It 1963, the number became 2312. Towards the end of the year 1975, the number of high schools under WBBSE was 8000. At present, it handles nearly 10238 schools. As the recognized schools’ number increased, the number of examinees sitting for the Secondary Examination of WBBSE raised from 42000 to 8 lakhs in 2006. The West Bengal Board of Secondary Education has restructured the Secondary Examination syllabus several times to stay updated.
