About Bar Council of the State of West Bengal
The constitution of the State Bar Council of West Bengal took place according to the provisions of the 1961 Advocates Act and the Bar Council of India Rules, namely, Rule 40, Rule 41, Rule 42, Rule 43 and Rule 44. It is an autonomous body that is responsible for laying down fixed standards of etiquette and professional conduct for advocates in the state along with determining standards of the state’s legal education. Enrollment of certified advocates and maintaining discipline is among the responsibilities of the State Bar Council of WB.
The West Bengal Bar Council has different committees for dealing with different areas. Among its committees, the Disciplinary Committees and the Enrollment Committee are Statutory Committees. The Disciplinary Committee has several vital powers. Some other committees are the Rules Committee, the Executive Committee, and the Advocates Welfare Fund Committee. They designed these committees with the intention of looking into specific areas.

The number of members in the West Bengal Bar Council is 26. Among these 26 members, West Bengal’s Advocate General is an Ex-officio member. The remaining 25 members come from the state’s 18 districts. The members of the Bar Council of West Bengal join for a time span of 5 years. The State Bar Council also has the liberty of electing its own Vice-Chairman and Chairman for two years and not more. The election of the Vice-Chairman and the Chairman are from the State Bar Council of West Bengal’s members.

Qualifications to become a member of the Enrollment Committee in West Bengal
- Firstly, He should be an Indian citizen
- Secondly, He should have a law degree
- Thirdly, He needs to be at least 20 years of age
