Nagaland Bar Council
Usually, all states in India have their individual Bar Councils as per the 1961 Advocates Act. This Bar Council which is an autonomous body encompasses several states, namely, Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Tripura, Nagaland, Sikkim, and Mizoram. So, there is no separate Nagaland Bar Council. Instead, it is a part of a standard bar council that functions as the Bar Council for several north-eastern states.
History of the constitution of the Bar Council of Nagaland
The Bar Council we are talking about is a statutory body that abides by the provisions of the Advocates Act of 1961. At the time of its establishment on 15th December 1961, it came into existence mainly for Assam and Manipur. Afterward, when the state of Nagaland came, the same Bar Council got its new name as the Bar Council of Assam, Nagaland and Union Territory of Manipur according to the 1962 Nagaland Act’s section 14 and it started functioning as the Bar Council for all three regions.
After passing of the North Eastern Areas (Re-organization) Act in 1971, the Bar Council again got its new name as the Bar Council of Assam, Nagaland, Meghalaya, Manipur, Tripura, Arunachal Pradesh, and Manipur.
